Students who are language deprived may not have the vocabulary needed to be successful in the classroom.  Research shows that our experiences/”background knowledge” lead to increased vocabulary which leads to increased literacy skills and achievement.  (Nagy, Anderson, & Herman, 1987; Bloom, 1976; Dochy, Segars, & Buehl, 1999 and others).  This session will focus on how we connect background knowledge to a student's learning experience to help support academic success.
